Cyberpunk is often referred to as, “a sub-genre of science fiction that features advanced science and technology in an urban, dystopian future. On one side you have powerful mega-corporations and private security forces, and on the other you have the
dark and gritty underworld of illegal trade, gangs, drugs, and vice.”, by Shreya Bhattacharya in her article, “Everything You Need to Know About Cyberpunk” The movie, “Tron” upon entrance is just that, a neon dystopia. Tron is a dark world lit up by the lights that make up the buildings, vehicles and suits that the programs wear and most of all the grid itself.
There is a speech that Kevin gives at the beginning talking about how this game is, “our world, our future and our destiny”. Trying to tell the people that this game will someday be the way our world looks and the way it works. The game is the digital frontier for what could be possible in our own world someday. Right now, our world can only be compared to games in the sense that our highways look like circuits and clusters of information moving around can create objects that look like everyday objects or vehicles. Inside the game you can see that the characters can transform a baton into a motorcycle by simply pulling it apart to create the handlebars while releasing the information clusters stored within to create the bike seemingly out of thin air. The clusters of information make up everything in the game whether it be the programs, people, or the structures.
Another way that the game can relate to our world today is that inside the game, they use a disk that's attached to the back of the person to store information. Your disk is your life, it stores everything you know. The disk is basically like a flash drive for the brain. A way for you or somebody else to access the information inside your brain. However this disk has many uses for the users and programs. They say it's your lifeline for it stores all your knowledge and it's a weapon to protect and defend yourself during fights.
In the movie there is an incredible use of light and color. The use of light helps to accentuate certain details throughout the entirety of the movie. Light is used to make up the vehicles that are used inside the video game, details on the outfits of the players, on buildings and throughout the entire grid. The light is used to show life and power flowing through objects. Whenever there is an update it can be visibly seen flowing through the lights of the entire grid. Along with the light showing life it can also be used to destroy life. The characters use their light paths to destroy other characters' light paths. The use of light also helps to distinguish the kinds of people in the game. The bad guys are often seen with the orange or yellow color and the good guys are seen with blue or white.
