Empyrean is a scientific sanctuary that celebrates innovation. The campus style layout of the buildings allows for everything to surround and enhance Elon Musk’s Hyperloop in order to pay homage to innovation. At this stage, the Hyperloop is starting out as a test track, but has the potential to change public transportation. With these endless opportunities at hand, Empyrean thrives off of the infinite scientific possibilities brought to it by the Hyperloop.

Science is worshipped at this site and is celebrated as a way of life. Influence from cyberpunk helped to enhance this portrayal as it focuses on a dystopic future where humans are heavily influenced by technology. Within the realm of Empyrean, the influence of technology has taken over as a source for hope and is now worshipped as a celestial power. The Hyperloop is what sparked this scientific worship as it has moved innovation forward and created a new outlook on life and where it could go. The formation of the buildings and site surrounding the Hyperloop make for a ritualistic setting where everyone circles and observes the Hyperloop as they move throughout Empyrean. There is also much terracing and stair stepping around the site which alludes to its representation as an altar for the worship of innovation.

The focus of Empyrean being scientific worship led to the choice of its materiality being reflective and its main colors being white and silver. Water plays a major role in many of the world’s religions through its use in rituals, so this idea is reinterpreted through the reflectivity of the exterior of Empyrean as well as the blue accents throughout the exterior and the entirely blue interior. Along with this, the colors white and silver also play major roles in many religions as they represent purity and holiness. Materiality ties in celestial properties in order to enhance the idea of innovation ideology within the project.

Empyrean creates an oasis for the celebration of innovation; which has become possible due to the leap forward in science by Elon Musk with the Hyperloop. This innovative creation even brings hope for expansion for Empyrean as it sets out for new possibilities. The division of the buildings and the island-like nature of the terraced site allows for more clusters to emerge around it and further expand the worship of science set in Empyrean.
