Creative Drawing with Davison Carvalho


Background

Davison Carvalho is a concept artist currently working as head of Ui and lead concept artist at amazon studios in Seattle. He is also a production designer, art director and producer, with over 2 decades of experience in multiple art related roles. His work can be seen in many popular movies and video games including, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Avengers: Endgame, and Fortnite. According to an interview with Creative Chair, Carvalho started with Graphic Design, at a local advertisement agency in Brazil when he was 15 years old. He then got into web design shortly after, but he felt like he was missing the creative drawing and illustration part that he always enjoyed. Years later, after winning an art contest in a Fashion Week event in Brazil, he started working for a big brand there which gave him the knowledge of mixing graphic design, illustration, product design and a lot of storefront designs, set dressing and catwalk design. That motivated him to open his own design studio called FOMA. For its last two years, the studio became an independent game studio, and that experience led him to where he is now making Ui for the game industry.

Visuals

Science fiction is defined as a genre of speculative fiction that typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. Carvalho’s work pulls from all of those concepts. He brings to life lots of very diverse images of characters, as well as futuristic equipment. His online gallery features very human-like robots, astronauts in space, and different machines. Seeing the projects he has worked on, it is very safe to say that sci-fi has definitely influenced his work. His work is also very detailed to the point where it could seem real. Even his non-digital art shows lots of detail just like in sci-fi.








One of Carvalho’s most famous works is for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He designed a

device for the movie. This work is different from most of the images on his page, because it has more 2D aspects than the detailed 3D images. Referencing Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi deleted scenes, he came up with the designs for a device at the new order bridge command.

Role

In the realm of “World Building”, concept art plays a big role. Worldbuilding is the process of creating entire fantasy worlds from scratch, all while considering the logistics of these worlds to make them as believable as possible. Concept art is a great way to start the design and present ideas. For most designers the biggest hurdle is the start of a project. Concept art can help speed up that process, but at the same time paying attention to where details will be presented. In film, concept art sets off a good starting point when we know the genre. After directors and production designers come up with the movie ideas, the concept art renders possible visual depiction of those ideas.

Closing

Davison Carvalho experiments with lots of different styles and ways of working in order to come up with his concept art. For example, he uses techniques like matte-painting, 3D blockage, kitbashing, and photo manipulation for quicker or more detailed concept art. By experimenting with elements from science fiction and its influences on the built environment, as well as by working in many other forms of art, Carvalho has made a name for himself in the world of concept art.
